Serpie ladies win the mid-London division of the Southern Counties Veterans AC League

The ladies had another great match at Perivale last week with a very convincing win (by 34 points) over second placed Hillingdon.

We finished the series winning 3 of the 4 matches, well ahead of nearest rivals Herne Hill Harriers, and have now qualified for the finals on 3 September.

The track events started with a memorable 800m; not only did all our scorers come first in their age group (Victoria Brown, Cheryl Sacks, Cath Fergusson and Avril Riddell) but I think we broke the record for the number of non-scorers with six other ladies giving it a go (is it something to do with that icosathlon?)

Great sprinting performance with 3 wins in the 200m (Rhiannon Needham, Hel James and me) and one second place (Ally Nolan) and superb results in the 3000m with Victoria, Cath and Avril winning again and Nicola McGlennon in third. There was more great Serpie participation from non-scorers in these events, including Camilla Allwood and Carole Wisdom. The evening finished with the 4 x 100m relay and our sprinters came in second place behind a very strong Hillingdon team.

All the field events were covered and we had good solid performances across them all. Hel James won her age group in the long jump and also earned good points for javelin and high jump. We had lots of other second and third places (Margaret Lang for long jump, Jan Farmer and Mary Davies for hammer, Tolli Hickes and Margaret Sills for javelin and Heidi Rasmussen for long and high jump); there were also several non-scorers, ensuring lots of red and gold on the field as well as the track!

As always many thanks to Bev Thomas for managing us on the evening and ensuring we all got to our events on time (often a challenge giving the long journey from Central London) and to Ros Young who came to support and officiate.

Congratulations to everyone for a great season and for putting the Serpentine ladies back at the top of the mid-London division. Many thanks also to everyone who officiated or helped at any of the matches, in particular our home match at Battersea, without which we could not have competed.

We now need to get a strong team together for the finals in Ashford on Sunday 3 September; the competition can be quite tough but it is a great opportunity to compete against people of you own age and watch some fantastic and inspirational performances.
