Serpentine Women win Southern Counties Veterans Match
Twelve Serpie ladies ventured out to Hillingdon last Monday for the second match of the Southern Counties Veterans AC league.
It is a challenging venue given the distance from Central London and the weather always seems to be miserable. True to form it was wet, windy and cold, but despite this, and a few last minute team changes, we won the match with a comfortable 8-point lead over our nearest rivals, Herne Hill Harriers.
There was some great running with six wins in the individual track events (Rhiannon Needham, Victoria Brown, Ally Nolan, Avril Riddell, Hel James and me) and lots of valuable second places. We were down in numbers for the field but in true Serpie style, with some doubling up, we covered every event. Great performances in the long jump with Heidi Rasmussen and Hel James first and Margaret Lang second. The shot and triple jump were run concurrently so Mary Davies and Margaret Sills (both doing an age group down) had to sprint backwards and forwards between the two; despite this they both came second and earned some good points. Great to see our newest member, Camilla Allwood, scoring with the discus and almost competing in the triple jump as a novice! The evening finished with a fantastic performance by our 4 x 100m relay team who won convincingly.
Thanks to everyone for great performances and superb team spirit. Special thanks to Bev Thomas, our team manager, who ensured we all got to the right event, at the right time and with the right number on our vest.
After two matches we are in joint first place with HHH; with two matches to go the finals are still within our reach, but we need to keep fielding a strong team, in particular for the next one which is HHH’s home match.
