TCS London Marathon 2022 – Interested in Running for Serpentine RC?

The TCS London Marathon is taking place on Sunday 2nd October 2022. Congratulations to those who have gained a ballot place recently. Every year, the London Marathon organisers allocate guaranteed places for members of running clubs like Serpentine RC. We choose to pass these on to members who have played an active part in making this such a great club in the past year.

Unfortunately, the London Marathon organisers have recently informed us that Serpentine RC will only have one place (rather than the usual four) representing the club in 2022, in addition to all other runners who qualify via different ways (good for age, charity, and open ballot). This is due to lots of places reserved for club runners being rolled over from 2020 and 2021 for many UK running clubs, in turn limiting how many places we have. We hope that we will have the usual four places again in 2023.

The good news is all members are welcome to apply and battle out for this one place in 2022! Just like 2021, we have adapted the usual club criteria to consider the impact of the pandemic. The qualification criteria and application procedure for the club place are as follows:

 

Application for the Club Place in the 2022 London Marathon

1. Membership and Marathon Entry Criteria

You must be a fully paid up first claim club member.

2. Volunteering/Race Participation Points

Activities over the 12 months between 1st June 2021 to 31st May 2022: 1 point per each activity/contribution

  • Active volunteer club coach coaching Serpentine members in a group, recognised as a club coach by committee:
    • at least 20 sessions (10 points/year), or
    • at least 10 sessions (5 points/year).
  • Event organisation, e.g. Green Belt RelayWelsh Castles Relay, NYD 10K, Handicap team (5 points for each event, max 10 points).
  • Leadership of club non-coached sessions, e.g. Saturday Hampstead/Greenwich Hills; Richmond Sunday runs; Trail runs; Cycle leadership (including Serpie Zwift cycling teams) for at least 10 sessions per year (5 points/year).
  • Team Captain for a season (5 points/year).
  • Major support role e.g. welfare officer, website support (including events and results teams), social media representative (5 points/year).
  • Committee Member for a year (5 points/year).
  • Volunteering at a Serpentine organised race/event/club run – 1 point per session, up to 10 points (please specify activity/activities and contribution(s) made).
  • Adhoc volunteer coaching, recognised as a club coach by committee – 1 point per session (up to 10 points).
  • Participation in any of the following races as a Serpentine RC member – 1 point per race, up to 12 points
    • Met League Cross Country (2021-22 season)
    • Sunday League Cross Country (2021-22 season)
    • Other Cross Country Championship races representing Serpentine RC (2021-22 season)
    • Summer Grand Prix Club Championships in July 2021 (1k, 1 mile, 3k, 5k)
    • Summer League (2021 season)
    • Serpentine Handicap (August 2021 to May 2022)
    • Southern Road Relays (March 2022)
    • Green Belt Relay (May 2022)
  • Other contributions e.g. contributions to any club activities other than those identified above, including assisting with or organising a social event (1 point per contribution, up to 10 points; please specify activity/activities and contribution/s made).

3. Priority

Priority for applicants shall be:

  1. 22 points or more – no club place in 2018, 2019 and 2021.
  2. 18-21 points – no club place in 2018, 2019 and 2021.
  3. 18 or above, and had a club place in 2018, 2019 and 2021.
  4. Under 18 points.

If there are more than one applicant in group (1), a ballot will take place.

If we have no applicant in group (1), the marathon place will be awarded to the person in the highest group (Group (2), (3) and then (4)), unless there are more than one applicant in the highest group, in which case a ballot will take place as required among those from the highest group.

The Committee shall be in charge of this process.

The runner representing the club must run in club colours in the London Marathon.

Please also contact me if you are unable to run in case a substitution can be arranged. 

All applications must be received by 23:59 on Sunday 19th June 2022. The successful applicant will be notified by Friday 24th June 2022 (14 weeks before race day).
