Another win for the ladies at the Southern Counties Veterans AC league!
The third match of the vets league was held at Battersea on 19th June.
We were expecting it to be close as it was Herne Hill Harriers’ home match but despite a few regulars being away we filled every slot and won again with a convincing 17 point lead over HHH.
Our runners (Victoria Brown, Avril Riddell, Hel James, Cheryl Sacks, Rhiannon Needham, Ally Nolan and Catkin Shelley) had excellent results taking first or second place in every race, including the relay. Superb performances in the 2,000m walk with Marianne Morris coming first in her age group; Margaret Lang and Phil Kelvin were competing in an age group down but both came in strongly in second place.
In the field, Tolli Hickes won the javelin and Margaret Lang the triple jump. It was great to have Jan Farmer back in the team scoring good points with the hammer. Mary Davies came second in the hammer and with very little notice volunteered for the triple jump and came second again. Hel James and Margaret Lang picked up more valuable points between them across the high jump, javelin and hammer. Special mention also to Rhiannon who did her first high jump since school and earned 4 points (before she hurt her hamstring); fingers crossed for a speedy recovery so we can have her back in the team.
Overall a great team performance and as always a special thanks to Bev Thomas for a fantastic job as the team manager keeping us on track all the events.
After three matches we are in first place and the prospect of qualifying for the regional finals in Ashford in early September is looking very promising. The men’s team also have had good results and are in third place (out of 8) behind two very strong Herne Hill and Hillingdon teams. Andrew Maynard is the captain and if any men over 35 are keen to join them for the final event please contact him at Andrew.Maynard@bluewin.ch
