Description
Portland is based at the Olympic sailing venue for 2012 and the race base facilities are second to none. The route circumnavigates the coast and cliffs of the Isle of Portland the whole way round. The brutal and lengthy shingle beach section provides a leg draining challenge to take on. The limestone landscape provides many inspiring and ever changing vistas as you hug the coastline.
For millennia ferocious seas have pounded against it while humans have quarried it, built prisons on it, crafted national icons from it (eg, St Paul's Cathedral) and exploded bombs on it! The beautiful Isle of Portland feels ravaged and abused, but all this drama serves to make it a hugely interesting place to run.
The distance around Portland is little over a Half Marathon at 13.4 Miles, Therefore the Marathon consists of 2 complete laps and the Ultra consists of 3 laps! Ideal training for the UTSW. If you think you can endure 3 stretches of Chesil Beach why not give this epic Ultra Marathon a go!
