Ful-On Standard Duathlon (24 Apr 2010)

Well done to everyone who raced at the Ful-On-Duathlon on Saturday it was a good turn out from Serpentine with 16 people racing, joint 2nd largest club turn out behind Ful-on-Tri who had 24 athletes. However it was mixed fortunes for the club on a gloriously sunny day at Kempton Park, if they'd given points for bad luck I think we would have won. I got a puncture on the first lap of the bike, Wendy Vandoolaeghe came off her bike on one of the corners of the very technical course and Ian also pulled out after the bike. We were also caught up in controversy around the lead runners of the 2nd wave taking a wrong turn on the first run and all ended up being disqualified, including our Male vet star Jon Gardner who was on for a storming time with a great bike and 2nd run.

However it wasn't all bad news, Richard Phillips came off the bike in 8th place and worked his way through the leaders to finish 3rd place overall and run a brilliant 16:11 for the last 5km. Jon Rae also ran a solid race with a 17:46 last run to finish 18th overall. Was also good to see Dan Bent back racing duathlon after his epic cycle to India, unsurprisingly his bike was solid but having only run 3 times in the last 10 months wasn't on his usual form for the run.

Mark Wadley & Elizabeth Madden managed to take the correct route on the run and were our scoring female and vet. Jan Farmer also managed to follow the course and won her age group.

If my calculations are right we finished 4th overall just behind Wimbledon Windmilers, the next London League race is the Morden 6n6 on the 9th May places are still available http://www.runnersw orld.co.uk/ events/registrat ioninfo.asp? sp=&v=1&EN= 54716 a great race for runners that can swim a bit with a 600m pool swim and 6 mile run.

Well done again to everyone who turned up and raced and nice to see some new triathlon faces amongst you.

Ful-On Standard Duathlon (14 Apr 2012)

Last Saturday saw twenty three Serpies turn out at Kempton Park Racecourse for the Ful-On Duathlon, which doubled (tripled?) up as a London Triathlon League race and the Serpentine Club duathlon championships.

The course consisted of 6km run, 18km bike and 6km run on a pan flat, although occasionally technical circuit of the racecourse. The race attracted a small-ish but high quality field of 175 athletes, mainly from the London triathlon clubs keen to score points in the second league race of the season following the Thames Turbo sprint triathlon on 9th April. In each of the league races scoring teams consist of the first five athletes from each club to finish which must include one female and one vet (40+).

James Gwyther, Angus Beaumont and Chris Graham finished in 8th, 11th and 12th place overall with Graeme Blair finishing 10th in the veteran category and Christine Lutsch 2nd overall in the female category to make up the Serpentine scoring team who ended the day joint first with SLH Tri and hosts Ful-On Tri in third. Christine therefore retains her title as the Serpentine womens duathlon champion with James taking the mens title.

Other notable performances included Richard Giles who finished 31st overall just ahead of Roland Woerle and Jonathan Gardner who were 11th and 13th in the vets category. Anna Gilmore and Sara Demonti also placed highly, finishing 3rd and 5th in the female race although both would probably have preferred a hillier course in preparation for their upcoming Wimbleball/Mallorca half ironmans! A full list of Serpentine competitors will be posted in the results section of the website.

The next London League race is the Dragonslayer Duathlon, hosted by East London Triathletes at Redbridge Cycling Centre on 29th April. There are still places available for this tough, technical 7/40/5km duathlon run round a purpose-built, traffic free cycle circuit so if you are looking for an early season leg burner sign up now!
