Southern Counties Vets AC League (09 Jul 2007)

LADIES REPORT

We've now had the results for the third of our four evening league fixtures. Serpie Ladies again came out on top even though a number of our regulars were away and Ealing arrived with a stronger team than before. We were particularly pleased to welcome Gill McCabe, a Serpie of many years standing, to her first outing with the vets team. Special thanks to Hel James too for being brave enough to high jump, following her long jump success at the previous fixture. We won the fixture with
96 points to Ealing's 88, Herne Hill with 44, Metros 19 and St Mary's Richmond 14.
After three fixtures Serpentine lead with 15 points to Ealing's 11 and Herne Hill's 10

The final fixture is this coming Monday night at Battersea and we very much hope to confirm our place in the Southern Counties Vets final on Sunday August 19.

Many thanks to all our competitors, helpers and supporters

Southern Counties Vets AC League (19 Aug 2007)

Jan Farmer's Ladies Captain Report of the Southern Counties Vets AC League Final.

We didn't come last!!! Some of you who've been around a year or two may
remember a similar comment in last year's report - but this year was
something else altogether. You may have noticed my pleading email of
last week. The unseasonably early date for the fixture, the clash with
the club's summer league and at least one illness had decimated our team
Never in all the years we've been going to the Southern Vets League
final - and Serpie Ladies have made it to the final every year since the
league was set up in the early '90s - have we gone with such a small -
and such and old - team!

There were 42 slots to be filled on the programme - excluding the
relays. And as the track events in the V35 category have A- and
B-string runners, 24 were in the V35 category. We took a team of just
12 competitors, of which only 3 were under 50!! So all sorts of
courageous goings on took place - including a V65 - Sue Lambert -
running the v 35 3000 B - and coming second in it! Everyone who was
there deserves plaudits but I have to make special mention of Sarah
Knox, the one person who decided to come with us after my begging email
last week. She took on 6 events and even managed to clear 1.15 on the
high jump having not jumped since school! Ruth took on 7 events- 3 of
which were on the go at the same time - and she still achieved an 8
second PB in the walk! The weather was quite mixed, with one major
downpour, but the Julie Rose Memorial Stadium at Ashford is a great
venue - it even has a 60m indoor track which some people used for
warm-ups.

Serpentine Ladies came 6th out of 7 with a tally of 133 points - 20
points behind Herts Phoenix but 55 ahead of Hastings. The contest was
won by Blackheath, who scored 238.5. Very well done all - and also big
thanks to those of you who helped us to the final and couldn't be there
on the day - especially Bev Thomas.

Meeting Report

A dedicated band of Serpie ladies vets turned out rain or shine for our Monday
evening track and field fixtures throughout the summer. This dedication and
"leave no slot unfilled" spirit was rewarded by a win of the Mid-London
section of the SCVAC League, thus securing our place in the final at Ashford last
Sunday. This success, when it happens, is a great triumph, but also a little
daunting. Predictably our opponents, drawn from an area ranging from Oxford, to
Cambridge, to the South Coast, are clubs with long track and field pedigrees and
many of these vets have competed in track and field all their lives.

But you as you would expect we didn't disgrace the Serpie name. Our squad of
fifteen competitors were undaunted by the presence of several age-group world
champions from other clubs and just did their best. We covered everything except
the pole vault and the v60 high jump and until virtually the end of the
competition we were lying 7th out of 8. Then came the relays. Our 4x100m came
6th, pulling back 2 points on Eastbourne and Hailsham who were lying just ahead
of us and then the 4x400m - with 3 of the same pairs of legs as the 4x100m -
reeled in another 3 points with a great 4th place finish - to put us into 6th
place - by 3.5 points!

It really would be unfair to single out any one particular team member in this
report as it was such a team effort, so I'm not going to. You can read the
individual results in the results database. But I must mention Bev - who was her
usual calm and cheerful self as team manager on the day, and our officials -
Steph - who also got roped in to run - Sammy, Ros, and Mary, who officiated as
well as competing. A big thank you too to those of you who helped us to the final
and then couldn't make it on the day.

Roll on next season. Any pole vaulters or V60 high jumpers out there?

Ladies Match Report

We had a good win at our opening SVAC match at Battersea a couple of weeks ago. It
was before this wonderful spell of summer weather and we counted ourselves very
lucky that the rain earlier in the day had cleared off.

The whole team put in some great performances, perhaps the most eye catching being a
win by more than half a lap on the 4x4 relay to round off the evening. There were
also a surprising number of PBs on a chilly night so early in the season. Those
that I know about include the 400 for Catkin
Shelley and Ali Nolan, the 1500 for Sarah Knox,Jane Nodder and Grace Wu and the
discus for Mary Davies. Mary gamely did her first walk for us too. We were also
very pleased to welcome a new member to the team - Margaret Lang, doing her
first track and field event since school. As ever, many thanks to Bev for managing
the team on the night.

If you are a V35 + woman and interested in taking part do get in touch. The
next fixture is Monday June 11at St Mary's Twickenham.

Southern Counties Vets AC League (10 Jun 2013)

On a chilly, but dry evening, the Serpie Ladies' Vets' team, returned a superb
win, in the Mid-London Division Meeting, held at Hillingdon Track, in Uxbridge.

The first event of the evening was trying to arrive at the track for a 6.30pm start.
It's a nightmare journey, from Central London, by both road & rail, but true to
form, I was able to declare everyone available for the early events. Thanks for
your sterling efforts ladies.

The team produced some excellent performances, some season's bests & a great
display of track running, a joy to watch.

The Serpie Vet Ladies have always been known for their great teamwork, but never was
it put more to the test, than Monday night - poor Catherine Coley had a family
emergency at the very last minute & ended up in A & E with her son, who had had an
accident at school. She hoped all evening to be able to get away & still compete.
Unfortunately, it did not work out, she & son, finally arrived home at 9.30pm.

Catherine was competing in 4 events, so these needed to be covered , at very short
notice. "No problem. Bev, of course I'll do triple/long jump, run 800m, etc, etc"
and so we got everything covered & consequently beat Hillindon AC Ladies, ontheir
home ground, by 10 points.

I 'm not going to single out any individual performances as everyone ran, jumped &
threw their hearts out, but I think I can be forgiven for saying thast the 4x100m
Relay team, of Tollie Hicks/Grace Wu/Ally Nolan & Cath Shelley produced a run ,
which can be only described as "textbook" & won convincingly. The changeovers were
perfect!

Looking forward to the next match, our home event , at Battersea, on Monday 24th
June. Thanks to everyone for making it such a good evening.

Bev

Southern Counties Vets AC League (01 Sep 2013)

Our vets track and field team had a great day out at Ashford at the League
final on Sunday. While we do usually manage to win the Mid-London section
of the League - and therefore qualify for the final - the competition we
meet there is rather more challenging and in many years our main objective
has been not to come eighth out of eight!

But this year, despite several of our regulars not being available or
falling by the wayside in the weeks since our July match, we had a lot of
talent as well as a great deal of enthusiasm in the team we took. Not only
did we have a competitor in every age-group and every event (even, a first
for our team, the pole vault) but we had some star performances. And we
were rewarded with a splendid 4th overall - probably our best position in
the20 years the SCVAC League has been in existence.

In a report like this it's hard to mention any one person without mentioning
everyone because even though some performances were obviously stellar,
others who willingly tackled events for which they had no previous
experience and with little expectation other than hoping for a point,
contributed enormously to the overall great team spirit as well as the
final score.

While the field competitors were working away quietly piling up the points
those of us in the stands were treated to some very exiting track races. As
might be expected from a club born out of distance running, it was the 3000
where our biggest points haul came, with a first for A-string Amy
Cope-Balchin, a second for B-string Sarah Knox and another win for V50 Jane
Nodder (who had earlier taken 5 secs off her 800m PB.)

Amy, Lisa Petit, Jane and Eddie Brocklesby good points for us the 1500 too.
We also all had a smile when the announcer pointed out Ironwoman Eddie in
this event. His recognition of her and of Hilary Walker - for her 9 London
to Brighton titles - went some way to counterbalancing his habitual
description of Serpentine as a social club! We all agree we are, of
course, but we know we are very much more than that!

Lisa also took on the 800 B string. On the sprints we had Anna
Diamantopoulos, who kindly stepped in to the team at the last minute (and
afforded Tolli Hickes the luxury of running B string), Hel James, running
down and age-group, and Trish Edwards. Tolli also stepped up to the 400 to
join Catherine Coley who further demonstrated her great versatility by doing
the 800 as well as her first high jump since school (assisted by some quick
Tolli coaching), the long jump, and the triple jump - which she even won.

In addition Hel James dependably covered all the jumps as usual and Teri
Griffith also took on the long jump and high jump as well as scoring in the
pole vault and running her first ever 400.
Mary Davies, Tolli, and Hilary ably covered the throws between them and
Hilary and Cheryl Sacks braved the walk - something of an ordeal at the
final, with several judges around the track dishing out warnings and
disqualifications
And at the end of this very full day there were, of course, the relays for
some very tired legs. We managed a 4th on the 4x1 and successfully got the
baton round on the 4x4 to round out a really great day.

The final scores were:

Epsom and Ewell 262

Dartford Harriers 252

Blackheath and Bromley 227.5

Serpentine 216

Radley 189.5

Barnet & District 177

Eastbourne Rovers/Hailsham Harriers 150

Special thanks to Bev Thomas for holding everything together on the day and
to Ros Young for being our travelling reserve.

Very well done team - including those who contributed to getting us to the
final without being able to be there themselves.

Jan

A small supplementary to my earlier report. One of our eagle-eyed team
noticed that I failed to mention that indeed 8 teams had qualified for the
final again this year (I had only listed 6 results). The Eastbourne
Rovers/Hailsham Harriers team was 7th and that the City of Portsmouth were
unable to field a team.

Match Report

Serpentine's women vets were one of seven women's teams from across the South of England who qualified for the Southern Counties Vets Athletics Club final and after a great day of competition we came 4th.

This is always an extremely competitive event with most other finalists coming from specialist track and field clubs. Sunday’s event had such stars competing as Clare Elms who has set world records for the W50 800m, and heptathlete and current British Indoor Pentathlon W35 record holder Diane Norman. Ros Tabor, well known to many of us upper age-group women runners over the years, was fresh from the European Vets Athletics Championships in Izmir where she medalled in the W65 category.

Serpentine fielded a team with some depth to it, with 17 competitors across the three age-groups (W35, W50 and W60). We did manage to cover all the slots but one – the younger age-group pole vault. At the end of the day we came a very credible 4th, with 208 points, 21 points behind 3rd place Blackheath and Bromley. As with last year the women’s competition was won by Epsom and Ewell, who achieved a score of 264 points. Cambridge Harriers placed 2nd.

Our team worked very hard over the long day of competition. In that rarified company wins were hard to come by but Pam Rutherford managed one in only her second attempt at the 2000m walk (and well supported by Marianne Morris who was second walking down an age-group as a W50). Catkin Shelley managed to blow the field away in the W50 400m as well as competing in the 100m and 200m and the 4x100m and 4x400m relays; and our hammer squad also delivered a couple of wins – Mary Davies in the W35 and me in the W60. The most prolific Serpie competitors of the day were Catherine Coley (high jump, long jump, triple jump, 400m and 4x400m relay) and Tolli Hickes (100m, 200m, 400m, 4x400m relay, shot and javelin!)

The competitive nature of the event also helped several of our team to achieve PBs and season’s bests – Vic Carter was spurred on by Di Norman’s presence to a PB in the 800m and Jane Nodder was on a roll with PBs in the 800m and 1500m and a season’s best in the 3000m, but the whole team performed extremely well and we were especially pleased to have some members new to the team this season at the final, notably Cath Ferguson, performing brilliantly in the next age-group down to her own, and Martha McKenzie-Minifie, on her way back to fitness post-injury.

Special thanks are due to Bev Thomas for keeping things together on the day (and throughout the season), to Ros Young for being travelling reserve and to Sammy Li for giving up a day to travel down to officiate at the event.

The team, in no particular order, was: Tolli Hickes, Alison Nolan, Catkin Shelley, Hel James, Catherine Coley, Victoria Carter, Martha McKenzie-Minifie, Jane Nodder, Margaret Sills, Cath Ferguson, Avril Riddell, Pam Rutherford, Marianne Morris, Teri Griffith, Hazel Paterson, Mary Davies and Jan Farmer.
