Cortina Dobbiaco 30k (06 Jun 2004)

A beautiful run in the Dolomites of northern Italy. The race started with a 12km drag up the Val Boite valley towards Cimabanche along a disused railway line. At the top of the pass, runners could pause to look west towards the spectacular (and still snow-covered) Tre Cime mountain peaks. On the descent past Lago di Landro, the surface turned to loose scree and gravel, spoiling any chances of making up time lost on the ascent, but this was never going to be a PB course. Besides, a slower run provided an opportunity to take advantage of the biscuits and bananas at the various well-stocked feed stations. The race ended at a running track in Dobbiaco, where weary bodies were recharged with huge bowls of pasta and cold beer. This was a spectacular and well-organised race and I would thoroughly recommend it to other runners as a possible alternative to Davos.
