SUMMARY:Sunday Richmond Park Long Run
DESCRIPTION:\nSunday morning long runs in Richmond Park are a great way to do your weekly long slow distance (LSD) run. The path round the perimeter of the park is about 7.2 miles. Some people do one lap, some do two (and some do in between). All abilities are welcome.\n\n\n\nWe do these runs every Sunday all year round (although check first over Christmas and Easter). There is always someone there, so all you need to do is to show up.\n\n\n\nWe meet at the Information Point, which is by the disabled parking bays in the car park next to Pembroke Lodge, near Richmond Gate ( https://www.serpentine.org.uk/pages/location_richmond.html ). There are toilets and refreshments on site and water fountains on the route.\n\n\n\nTo be fair to everyone we set off at 9:00 sharp (until end Mar 2024 we are trailling a start of 9:30 prompt, and from April we will revert to a 09:00 start)\n\n\n\nPlease just come along (no need to warn us you are coming). People who are not members of Serpentine are very welcome though, of course, if you come on a regular basis we would like you to join the club ( https://www.serpentine.org.uk/pages/member_howjoin.html ).\n\n\n\nThe group usually attracts a wide variety of abilities. We do take special attention to ensure newcomers have someone to run with. There aren’t any facilities for storing a bag so do come along ready to run. \n\n\n\nIn the interests of safety, please do not wear headphones when taking part in club runs. In Richmond Park, we share the paths with cyclists and it is important that you can hear any that are approaching you from behind.\n\n\n\nWe nearly always go to Pembroke Lodge for refreshments after the run.\n\n\n\nIf you want more information, please send an email message to sunday@serpentine.org.uk ( mailto:sunday@serpentine.org.uk ) – and one of us will reply.\n\n\n\nTravel to Richmond Station by train (from Waterloo) or tube (District Line). There is a map and further details on our Richmond Park page ( https://www.serpentine.org.uk/pages/location_richmond.html ). The meeting point in the park is quite a trek from the station – leave yourself at least half an hour.\n

} else { triggerPostRender(); } } );} ); \n/* ]]> */\n\n\n\n\n\nRoutes\n\n\n\nYou have a choice of two routes – 2 parks (7km) and 3 parks (11.5km). \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMost weeks in marathon training season, there is a mid-week semi-long run of approximately 15km.\n\n\n\nPace\n\n\n\nThe pace groups vary but currently range between 4:45min/km (7:40min/mile) – 7min/km (11min/mile). \n\n\n\nChanging and Bag Drop\n\n\n\nThere is space to change at St Mary’s school, but no formal changing facilities, and there are no showers for after the run. You may store your bags (at your own risk)\n\n\n\n\nArrive at St Mary’s School with enough time to change and join the run. We leave promptly at 18:50\n\n\n\nBring your club membership card (or your joining confirmation email if you have joined recently) and present this at the school entrance. \n\n\n\nOur rooms at the school are open from approximately 18:10 and manned by club members throughout the run (until 20:45), so your belongings are safe.\n\n\n\nWe need to vacate the school by 21:00\n\n\n\n\nRun starts\n\n\n\nRuns start with a warm-up jog from St Mary’s School to Speaker’s Corner Kiosk. Groups leave St Mary’s School at 18:50. If there is a longer run on offer, this group will leave slightly earlier. Further breakdown into pace groups happens near Speakers Corner Kiosk, with runs starting from 19:00. We ask first-timers to join the run at St Mary’s School, but those who recognise the groups are welcome to join near Speakers’ Corner Kiosk.\n\n\n\nOther do’s and don’ts\n\n\n\n\nHeadphones are not permitted on club runs so that all runners can hear as well as see hazards.\n\n\n\nBe responsible for your own actions and the safety of yourself and others! Follow the rules of the road and be aware of those around you, including cars, bikes and pedestrians.\n\n\n\nIn the winter months, the runs happen in darkness, so we advise everyone to wear bright and reflective colours.\n\n\n\nAll runners should make sure other runners in their group who may feel vulnerable are accompanied at all times, as much of the park is dimly lit.\n\n\n\nDogs are not permitted on club runs.\n\n\n\n\nAnd finally…\n\n\n\nAny queries, please feel free to email our Wednesday Runs team, Hans, Tom and Nic ( mailto:Wednesday-runs@serpentine.org.uk ).\n\n\n\nHope to see many of you in these runs! We also look forward to welcoming those who have just joined us or are coming to try out the club.\n

SUMMARY:Paddington Track
DESCRIPTION:\nThe sessions are delivered by EA qualified coaches; Gavin Edmonds (Athletics Coach Endurance), Ewan Maynard (Assistant Athletics Coach).\n\n\n\nThe sessions are for Endurance Athletes and Triathletes with a leaning toward speedwork suitable for Marathoners.\n\n\n\nYou should have a specific time-based goal to attend this session and know your current paces and lap times, ie 3k, 5k, 10k pace, etc.\n\n\n\nThere is no minimum standard for this session but you should be regularly running 30 miles per week over 4-7 runs to make the most of it and be comfortable in completing the session. SUMMARY:Thursday Threshold @ Battersea Park
DESCRIPTION:\n(Lactate) Threshold training – Thursdays @ Battersea Park\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWhat is Threshold running? A threshold run ( https://www.englandathletics.org/news/simplifying-the-running-jargon-training-pace/#:~:text=Threshold%20running,an%20individual's%20current%20fitness%20level. ) is completed at an intensity just below the point where lactate builds up in the bloodstream causing your running to slow down. The point at which this occurs is known as our lactate threshold and is dependent on an individual’s current fitness level. This pace should feel hard but still comfortable over long periods of time. This helps your body to improve efficiency at clearing lactate. \n\n\n\nExpected effort: comfortably hard. Run just below the threshold level. RPE = 7-8\n\n\n\nConversational pace? Only during the warm-ups and cool-downs. During the threshold effort – only one-word answers should be possible. \n\n\n\nBenefits. Improves the body’s efficiency at clearing lactate and builds endurance.\n\n\n\nMeeting Location. The meeting location is just outside the Millennium Arena (Battersea Track), by the park’s map. The Google Maps location is available here ( https://www.google.com/maps/place/Central+Ave,+London+SW11+4BE/@51.4797229,-0.1524933,18z/data=!4m6!3m5!1s0x4876050f7bcd3b05:0x5e39436e2048d82d!8m2!3d51.4804278!4d-0.1528314!16s%2Fg%2F11g63xd5mq?entry=ttu ).\n\n\n\nFacilities. Lockers and showers are available at the Millenium Arena for a fee of £4.60 at reception. There is no need to pre-book this; just come to their reception and pay with a card as you go. The lockers are operated via a token which can be purchased in reception (£0.50) and reused. The bike lockers are available in front of the Millennium Arena. \n\n\n\nHealth & Safety tips. The Battersea Park can be busy (even in the dark evenings) with cyclists, dog walkers, joggers and other park users. We recommend all attendees wear reflective running gear and choose bright colours to increase their visibility during the training. We ask all participants to be extremely cautious on the corners of the park as there might be limited visibility there. We ask all participants to give the way to other park users rather than expect them to do the same. \n\n\n\nLayout of the session. We ask all members to click the I’m In!! button above to indicate their planned attendance. It helps the Lead Team with the planning of the session and the managing of the numbers. For the warm-up, we will use the 400m path from the Millennium Arena to the Bandstand and we will jog it at a social pace. We will then use the remaining 400m (from the Bandstand to the other side of the park) for the dynamic stretches, drills and strides. We ask that the participants with any injury inform the member of the Lead Team before the session by speaking to them face-to-face or emailing us beforehand at technical@serpentine.org.uk Due to the nature of the Threshold sessions, we strongly recommend that all runners participate in the warm-up, drills and strides to ensure that the body is ready for the high effort session. To get the most out of the group session, we recommend that each session is followed by a cool-down jog and light stretches in the groups afterwards.\n\n\n\nAutumn sessions – it’s time to build endurance and strength or peak for October-December races for distances from 10km to marathon. Sessions include Lactate Threshold (LT) and 10km paces with options for increasing or reducing the challenge for each session according to goals and current fitness.\n\n\n\nDateSessionNotes18 SeptPyramid: 1k/2km/3km/2km/1km @ LT pace with 1’ per km effort recovery. Options to stop after 3km element, depending on training goals25 Sept8-10 x 800 m @ LT pace; 200m jog recovery Option to do more reps if volume important for your goals2 October4 x 1 mile/1600m @ 10 k pace; 2’ active recovery.Club Champs 10k on Sunday 5 October (Middlesex 10k)9 October6-8 x 1k @ 10k pace; 90” static recoveryRoyal Parks half on Sunday 12th16 October4-6 x 2km @ LT pace; 90” recoveryClub Champs 10 miles on Sunday 19th (Cabbage Patch)23 OctoberPyramid: 1k/2km/3km/2km/1km @ LT pace with 1’ per km effort recovery. Options to stop after 3km element, depending on training goals30 October5-6 x 1 mile/1600m @10k pace; 2’ recovery 7 November2 x 15’ @ LT pace; 2’ recovery Coach Karen is away14 NovemberTime-based session; 8-12 x 4 mins @ 10km pace; 1’ jog recoveries (Total effort: 32- 48 mins) 21 NovemberLadder: 1k/2k/3k/4km @ LT pace with 1’ per km recoveriesDo fewer steps if more consistent with your goals.28 November8 x 1k @ 10k pace; 90” recovery 4 DecemberSharpener: 5 x 1k @ 5k pace; 2 min recovery Last big marathon of the year11 December2 x 20’ @ LT pace; 90” recovery 18 December6-8 x 1k @ 10k pace; 90” recovery 26 DecemberPyramid: 1k/2km/3km/2km/1km @ LT pace with 1’ per km effort recovery. Boxing Day\n\n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:Coached Threshold Session – Greenwich
DESCRIPTION:\nLooking for a daytime structured training session – why not come to the Thursday morning threshold sessions in Greenwich. Threshold training ( https://www.serpentine.org.uk/the-benefits-of-threshold-training/ ) helps improve VO2 max, bringing faster race times at a range of distances from 5km to marathons and reduced fatigue at slower paces. Sessions are suitable for anyone who can run continuously for 5km.\n\n\n\nThe group go to the cafe after the session where coach Karen is happy to provide advice on training plans, running technique and suitable drills.\n\n\n\nWhere and when?\n\n\n\nWe gather here ( https://w3w.co/legend.miles.topped ) in time to start the warm-up at 10am on Thursdays. Check beforehand, but often you can store bags in the boot of a car, at your own risk, whilst training. Training is usually over by around 11.00 am. Pre-booking for each session by midnight on the Wednesday is essential. Please sign up below as we have a limit of 12 runners. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nIn Greenwich park there are clean, public, pay 20p with card toilets, water fountains, car and bike parking and a delightful cafe for post-training refreshments.\n\n\n\n\nThe sessions: \n\n\n\nThe format is very flexible to suit a variety of training goals and fitness levels. \n\n\n\n Each week we warm-up jog for 10 mins, do some mobility work and strides. \n\n\n\nThe main session is anywhere between 4 and 10 x 1 km repetitions around a flat, right-angled triangle route. The pace can be at anything from 5km to sub-threshold pace. Recoveries can be 1-2’ recoveries, depending on the aims of each athlete. \n\n\n\nCoaches Karen and Sam are happy to discuss what might suit you on the day. \n\n\n\nAfterwards, we do some brief stretches (weather permitting) before reviewing the morning’s work over coffee in the cafe afterwards.\n\n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:Saturday Hampstead Heath Hills
DESCRIPTION:\nThis session is open to all hills enthusiasts. It is not a coached session but rather a group of friendly regulars who meet up on Hampstead Heath and run hills. We do, however, have people with coaching experience partaking regularly and any question, comment or suggestion is welcome.\n\n\n\nThe session is modelled on the Greenwich Hill session where many of the regulars had their first hill experience, but instead of having two simultaneous sessions we design each hill so you can run it in different ways depending on your training aims and current form.\n\n\n\nThe session is on almost every Saturday. To be sure you do not travel in vain please drop Us ( mailto:hamptsead-hills@serpentine.org.uk ) an email so we can you include you on the regular emails about the sessions.\n\n\n\nWhere and when?\n\n\n\nWe meet outside the Parliament Hill Track ( https://www.serpentine.org.uk/pages/location_parliamenthill.html ) changing rooms normally at 9.45am ready to run. We have a yearly pass to the track so we can use a locker. If you need to store a bag or clothes yourself, or if you want a shower afterwards, the price is £3.00 (Oct 2012).\n\n\n\nWhat to bring\n\n\n\n\nWe recommend that you use trail shoes. You may get away with road shoes on a dry day but in general you will need the extra grip, notably going downhill. We do not recommend using spikes as some of the hills are on hard trail-like surfaces.\n\n\n\nBring your own watch if you want to time yourself.\n\n\n\nBring water and some cash for tea / coffee or food afterwards and eventually for the track lockers.\n\n\n\n\nWhat to expect\n\n\n\n\nA plan for which hills we are running that day and possible variations you can run on each hill.\n\n\n\nA 10-15 minute warm-up jog before the session starts.\n\n\n\nFirst a ‘warm-up’ hill, 8 to 12 minutes. Then 3 sets of hills/cross country loops each taking between 6 and 15 minutes to run, which in total should give you between 30 and 45 minutes of quality running.\n\n\n\nWe aim to be finished by 11.15am and then head off to the ‘fifth hill’ for well deserved refuelling at a tea-house in the neighbourhood.\n\n\n\n\nHealth and Safety\n\n\n\nWe try to avoid the busiest parts of the Heath but there are always dog-walkers out, who have little (or no) control over their dogs. They too have the right to use the Heath and so do pedestrians, tourists and bikes (on some paths) and we expect you to show same respect for them as they show to you.\n\n\n\nYou should also be aware that this is nature and there are no flat surfaces but rather tree roots, rocks, rabbit holes and other natural trip hazards. We do try to use hills which have less of these ‘obstacles’ but we expect you to take the caution you think is necessary for you.\n\n\n\nContact\n\n\n\nContact Winston, Svetlana and Aleks at Hampstead-hills@serpentine.org.uk ( mailto:Hampstead-hills@serpentine.org.uk )\n

SUMMARY:Serpentine Handicap
DESCRIPTION:\nThe Serpentine Handicap is a race of 6,975 metres (4.3 miles). The course is twice round the Serpentine and Long Water, starting and finishing near the boathouse.\n\n\n\nUnlike other road races you may have taken part in, the start of the Handicap is staggered according to individuals’ past performances, so that all runners finish the race at about the same time. This is the brilliance of the Handicap race – both fast and slow runners have a chance of winning. If all goes well, there is an exciting finish down the final straight. The race rewards not the fastest runner but the runner who performs best relative to their previous performance.\n\n\n\nThe history of the Handicap ( https://www.serpentine.org.uk/race-handicap-hc-how/ ) and explanation of the handicap system ( https://www.serpentine.org.uk/race-handicap-hc-how/ ) make interesting reading. The Tom Hogshead Trophy ( https://www.serpentine.org.uk/race-handicap-who-tom/ ) is awarded at the end of the year (you can see past winners using the links on the right of this page). The Stratford Cup ( https://www.serpentine.org.uk/race-handicap-stratford-cup/ ) is presented to the handicap runner who achieves the highest average age-grading in the Handicap over six races in each calendar year, beginning in 2015. The results of the Handicap are published on the Serpentine website. You can also see the Handicap course records.\n\n\n\nRegistration and race timings\n\n\n\nThe Handicap is held on the first Saturday of each month. Registration currently takes place from 8:30am to 8.55am near boathouse (marked with a green cross on the map below). \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nYou may leave a bag in the registration area where it is watched over by a marshal during the race. The nearest tube stations are Knightsbridge and Hyde Park Corner.\n\n\n\nHandicap volunteers\n\n\n\nOur volunteers make the Handicap what it is. If you can help, please sign up here. You are invited to join us in the cafe afterwards and your drink is on us – please tell us what you want us to order for you. If there is a particular role you want to play please say so below.\n\n\n .comments-title { display:none; } \n \n This field is hidden when viewing the formevent_idThis field is hidden when viewing the formevent_dateThis field is hidden when viewing the formevent_ymd\n \n YYYY dash MM dash DD\n \n This field is hidden when viewing the formoccurrence_idThis field is hidden when viewing the formsettingsThis field is hidden when viewing the formexisting_responsePreferred task or locationYou are invited to join us in the cafe afterwards. SUMMARY:Wednesdays Runs @Regents Park
DESCRIPTION:\nWednesday morning runs in Regents Park are mid-week gentle runs, at a social pace. The main group run 6.5km in the park, although there are options to make shorten this. All abilities are welcome, those recovering from injury or with another session on their plan often join group meet, do their own training and share the post-run social.\n\n\n\nWe meet at 10:15 (10:00 if want a warm-up), by the bike racks, inside the park opposite the ice cream kiosk (across the road from the cafe), run for about 40 minutes then spend some time drinking tea and chatting in the Regents Bar and Kitchen in the inner circle.\n\n\n\nPlease contact Winston ( https://www.serpentine.org.uk/members/username/messages/compose/?r=winstonlord&_wpnonce=ce6f172867 ) to let him know you are coming.\n\n\n\nNote that there aren’t any facilities for storing a bag so do come along ready to run. In the interest of safety, please do not wear headphones when taking part in club runs.\n\n\n\nIf you want more information, please send an email message to Winston Lord ( https://www.serpentine.org.uk/members/username/messages/compose/?r=winstonlord&_wpnonce=ce6f172867 ).\n\n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:Soar Club Vest – Register Your Interest
DESCRIPTION:\nAre you interested in ordering a Soar race vest? We would like to put in an order this quarter (timing to be confirmed from Soar). Cost is about £70 each. Please register your interest below. \n\n\n\nIf there is enough interest, minimum 20men and/or 15women, we will make the order and request payment from you. Otherwise you can just buy our standard club singlets for sale here for £30 ( https://scimitarclubs.com/product-category/serpentine-running-club/ ). \n\n\n\nDifferent Male and Female cuts can be viewed on the Soar website. Pictures below include Soar singlet mens and womens sizing charts, and example Soar singlets worn by members. \n\n\n\nNote on sizing: Abu popped into to the Soar London store to try on the vests and would recommend sizing up. Based on the sizing guide, he measured and found that size S should leave a comfortable amount of space, but it wasn’t the case in store. It was very close to the body with very little room. The M fit much better and felt like how he thought the S would fit based on his measurements. He’s sized up on the sign up form (‘remove me’ button then re-add with new size).\n\n\n\n\nMen – https://www.soarrunning.com/collections/singlets-vests/products/race-vest-2-0-white-ss26?variant=56569208406391 ( https://www.soarrunning.com/collections/singlets-vests/products/race-vest-2-0-white-ss26?variant=56569208406391 )\n\n\n\nWomen – https://www.soarrunning.com/collections/womens-vests-and-crop-vests/products/womens-race-vest-white-ss26 ( https://www.soarrunning.com/collections/womens-vests-and-crop-vests/products/womens-race-vest-white-ss26 )\n\n\n\n.wp-block-kadence-advancedgallery .kb-gallery-type-grid.kb-gallery-id-80373_23231b-01{margin:-5px;}.kb-gallery-type-grid.kb-gallery-id-80373_23231b-01 .kadence-blocks-gallery-item{padding:5px;}.kb-gallery-id-80373_23231b-01 .kadence-blocks-gallery-item .kb-gal-image-radius, .kb-gallery-id-80373_23231b-01 .kb-slide-item .kb-gal-image-radius img{border-radius:0px 0px 0px 0px;;}\n\nYou must be logged in to the website to RSVP.\n\n\n\nAny questions please reach out to me.\n\n\n\nNicholas BrowneCompetition Leadcompetition@serpentine.org.uk ( mailto:competition@serpentine.org.uk )\n
