SUMMARY:Sunday Richmond Park Long Run
DESCRIPTION:\nSunday morning long runs in Richmond Park are a great way to do your weekly long slow distance (LSD) run. The path round the perimeter of the park is about 7.2 miles. Some people do one lap, some do two (and some do in between). All abilities are welcome.\n\n\n\nWe do these runs every Sunday all year round (although check first over Christmas and Easter). There is always someone there, so all you need to do is to show up.\n\n\n\nWe meet at the Information Point, which is by the disabled parking bays in the car park next to Pembroke Lodge, near Richmond Gate ( https://www.serpentine.org.uk/pages/location_richmond.html ). There are toilets and refreshments on site and water fountains on the route.\n\n\n\nTo be fair to everyone we set off at 9:00 sharp (until end Mar 2024 we are trailling a start of 9:30 prompt, and from April we will revert to a 09:00 start)\n\n\n\nPlease just come along (no need to warn us you are coming). People who are not members of Serpentine are very welcome though, of course, if you come on a regular basis we would like you to join the club ( https://www.serpentine.org.uk/pages/member_howjoin.html ).\n\n\n\nThe group usually attracts a wide variety of abilities. We do take special attention to ensure newcomers have someone to run with. There aren’t any facilities for storing a bag so do come along ready to run. \n\n\n\nIn the interests of safety, please do not wear headphones when taking part in club runs.  In Richmond Park, we share the paths with cyclists and it is important that you can hear any that are approaching you from behind.\n\n\n\nWe nearly always go to Pembroke Lodge for refreshments after the run.\n\n\n\nIf you want more information, please send an email message to sunday@serpentine.org.uk ( mailto:sunday@serpentine.org.uk ) – and one of us will reply.\n\n\n\nTravel to Richmond Station by train (from Waterloo) or tube (District Line). There is a map and further details on our Richmond Park page ( https://www.serpentine.org.uk/pages/location_richmond.html ). The meeting point in the park is quite a trek from the station – leave yourself at least half an hour.\n

SUMMARY:Greenwich Hills
DESCRIPTION:\n“If you can push hard up the hills, pushing hard on the flat is easy” (Hannah Cockcroft’s Dad).\n\n\n\nHill training has a history of ups and downs but has been firmly hated since day 1 for all runners. Hill training isn’t just for those intent on hill racing – it makes you stronger and faster on the flat too. Strengthen your legs and lungs – and even make new running friends – by joining in our slightly tough but effective, fun and sociable coached hill session all year round.\n\n\n\nThere are ample, clean public, pay on entry, toilets, water fountains and a café for post-training refreshments.\n\n\n\nThe current coach is Philomena Skeffington\n\n\n\nWhere and when?\n\n\n\nWe gather here ( https://w3w.co/legend.miles.topped ) in time to start the warm-up at 9.30am on Saturdays. You can store your gear in the boot of a car we usually have, at your own risk, whilst training. Training is usually over by around 11.00 am. See the Greenwich Park ( https://www.serpentine.org.uk/pages/location_greenwich.html ) page for full details. Pre-booking for each session by midnight on the Friday is essential. Please sign up below. You will be turned away if you have not signed up.  If more than 20 people sign up, we will divide into two groups to reduce the risk of crowding other park-users. \n\n\n\n\nSign up here\n\n\n });\n });\n \n\n\n\n\nAims\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe sessions are suitable for new, old, fast, slow, disabled, cat lovers, hamster haters, vegans, LGBTQ+ and even runners from north the river are welcome along. The sessions are designed to keep the groups together in loops and we only lose a few runners each year (still get sightings of Dave from 1987 every few years – still trying to find his way out, poor thing!)\n\n\n\nWe really want new members; people training for races and who want to get stronger or even just to see what these hill sessions are all about.  If you are a non-member and would like to try out one of these sessions in advance of joining the club, sign-up here ( https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSczzuSxHVNAvlJ766sUi37rpKfTdv8zYr_02LUcKUcJq6BGrw/viewform?usp=sf_link ) and we’ll expect you.\n\n\n\nWe make the sessions suitable for all levels of runners by providing different levels of training and splitting into small groups where required.\n\n\n\nIn general we have a 4 or 5 week rolling programme, depending on whether the month has 5 Saturdays. The first Saturday of the month includes smaller inclines and uncomplicated routes, so is particularly inclusive for hill running novices who can focus on learning the technical teaching points we provide, those returning from injury and the advanced runners who just want to run fast!\n\n\n\nEach Saturday we aim to make the session a little more difficult. The 4th Saturday is always a Kenyan session, this is a non-stop running session, again we have tact-tics to keep slower runners with us.\n\n\n\nIf there is a 5th Saturday we do one of our “specials”. These are one of: hill sprints/Indian file/relays or maybe even a time trial.  \n\n\n\nWe aim to help you: build leg-strength (especially the quadriceps and gluteal muscles – i.e. thighs and buttocks); develop good hill-running technique; strengthens your heart and lungs; increase lactic acid tolerance and – not least – increases your confidence on hills. You should begin to notice benefits after about 4 sessions. \n\n\n\nAthletes suffering from suffering from calf, achilles tendon or plantar fasciitis injuries may find that hills exacerbates these injuries.\n\n\n\nWhat to bring\n\n\n\nBring water or other drinks, fell shoes (ideally), cross-country spikes or your muddiest trainers, and something warm to put on after training. Bring your Heart Rate Monitor too, if you have one.\n\n\n\nWhat to expect\n\n\n\nThe precise content of the session varies from week to week but is broadly speaking as follows:\n\n\n\n\nWarm-up of around 2 miles jogging, followed by dynamic mobility exercises and strides. Great way for newbies to say hi and get to know everyone.\n\n\n\nThe main hill session, rough guide as in table below.\n\n\n\nCool-down jog of up to a mile.\n\n\n\nStretch.\n\n\n\nTotal distance to write in your training log: about 5.0–7.5 miles (or 20-40 if you get lost). Count it as a speed/strength session.\n\n\n\n\nAdjourn to the Tea House for chat and refreshments (optional).\n\n\n\nSession plans for the weeks ahead\n\n\n\nDateSession1st SaturdayWelcome to hills – Best one for newbies – easy hills, simple to follow and will be focus on technique, speed and craic2nd SaturdayVomit Rocket – push hard or go home 3x10min on the toughest hills. Not fun but feels great after!3rd SaturdaySteam Punk – 16, 12, 8 min on 3 different hills – stamina and solid pace like a steam train with a punk attitude towards hills4th SaturdayMonthly Misery – (previously known as Kenyan hills) – 45 mins up and down 12 different hills with no breaks. All welcome and it is easy to drop in/out of hills in line with your fitness and training needs.5th SaturdayMountain out of a Mole Hill – For legal reasons we have been advised to keep the details confidential due to trigger words that increase the risk of causing heart palpitations, anxiety, dizziness, nausea. Vomiting mid-run is deemed the norm. There is a reason this is only held 4 times a year!\n\n\n\n\n\nContact details\n\n\n\nbermondsey@serpentine.org.uk\n\n\n\nOn these sessions we welcome runners of all fitness levels and abilities. If you have special needs and are unsure whether you want to give this a try please contact us on the above email so that we can help.\n\n\n\nWe also occasionally organise additional fun runs at Oxleas Wood.\n

});\n });\n \n\n\n\n\nRoutes\n\n\n\nYou have a choice of two routes – 2 parks (7km) and 3 parks (11.5km).   \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMost weeks in marathon training season, there is a mid-week semi-long run of approximately 15km.\n\n\n\nPace\n\n\n\nThe pace groups vary but currently range between 4:45min/km (7:40min/mile) – 7min/km (11min/mile). \n\n\n\nChanging and Bag Drop\n\n\n\nThere is space to change at St Mary’s school, but no formal changing facilities, and there are no showers for after the run.  You may store your bags (at your own risk)\n\n\n\n\nArrive at St Mary’s School with enough time to change and join the run.  We leave promptly at 18:50\n\n\n\nBring your club membership card (or your joining confirmation email if you have joined recently) and present this at the school entrance.  \n\n\n\nOur rooms at the school are open from approximately 18:10 and manned by club members throughout the run (until 20:45), so your belongings are safe.\n\n\n\nWe need to vacate the school by 21:00\n\n\n\n\nRun starts\n\n\n\nRuns start with a warm-up jog from St Mary’s School to Speaker’s Corner Kiosk.  Groups leave St Mary’s School at 18:50.  If there is a longer run on offer, this group will leave slightly earlier.  Further breakdown into pace groups happens near Speakers Corner Kiosk, with runs starting from 19:00.  We ask first-timers to join the run at St Mary’s School, but those who recognise the groups are welcome to join near Speakers’ Corner Kiosk.\n\n\n\nOther do’s and don’ts\n\n\n\n\nHeadphones are not permitted on club runs so that all runners can hear as well as see hazards.\n\n\n\nBe responsible for your own actions and the safety of yourself and others! Follow the rules of the road and be aware of those around you, including cars, bikes and pedestrians.\n\n\n\nIn the winter months, the runs happen in darkness, so we advise everyone to wear bright and reflective colours.\n\n\n\nAll runners should make sure other runners in their group who may feel vulnerable are accompanied at all times, as much of the park is dimly lit.\n\n\n\nDogs are not permitted on club runs.\n\n\n\n\nAnd finally…\n\n\n\nAny queries, please feel free to email our Wednesday Runs team, Hans, Tom and Nic ( mailto:Wednesday-runs@serpentine.org.uk ).\n\n\n\nHope to see many of you in these runs!  We also look forward to welcoming those who have just joined us or are coming to try out the club.\n

SUMMARY:Paddington Track
DESCRIPTION:\nThe sessions are delivered by EA qualified coaches; Gavin Edmonds (Athletics Coach Endurance), Ewan Maynard (Assistant Athletics Coach).\n\n\n\nThe sessions are for Endurance Athletes and Triathletes with a leaning toward speedwork suitable for Marathoners.\n\n\n\nYou should have a specific time-based goal to attend this session and know your current paces and lap times, ie 3k, 5k, 10k pace, etc.\n\n\n\nThere is no minimum standard for this session but you should be regularly running 30 miles per week over 4-7 runs to make the most of it and be comfortable in completing the session. For Triathletes, this may be less but you would ideally be around sub 2:45 for an Olympic distance triathlon. \n\n\n\n\n \n Non-members who have signed up for a trial\nThis table is visible only to SUMMARY:Saturday long run in central London
DESCRIPTION:\nA club run is a great way to do your weekly long slow distance (LSD) run. The distance run varies by season, it will always be at least 15km and in marathon season will be up to 35km.  If you are looking for a run of less than 15km join our regular Saturday social club runs.  On the longer marathon training runs there will always be drop-off points at well-known landmarks or tube stations for those who want a shorter option. \n\n\n\nAs a general rule, these runs start outside the “Serpentine Bar and Kitchen” in Hyde Park, where there is no bag drop. However, to make the most of our beautiful city, from time to time the runs will start and finish in different locations.\n\n\n\nAll abilities are welcome, with the main groups running between 5:00/km and 6:30/km.  Make sure you have enough fuel to last you for the run (there are usually spots to get water and snacks en-route)\n\n\n\nIf you want more information, please contact Michael Ngo ( mailto:ngomarta@hotmail.com ).\n\n\n\n\n

A threshold run ( https://www.englandathletics.org/news/simplifying-the-running-jargon-training-pace/#:~:text=Threshold%20running,an%20individual's%20current%20fitness%20level. ) is completed at an intensity just below the point where lactate builds up in the bloodstream causing your running to slow down. The point at which this occurs is known as our lactate threshold and is dependent on an individual’s current fitness level. This pace should feel hard but still comfortable over long periods of time. This helps your body to improve efficiency at clearing lactate. \n\n\n\nExpected effort: comfortably hard. Run just below the threshold level. RPE = 7-8\n\n\n\nConversational pace? Only during the warm-ups and cool-downs. During the threshold effort – only one-word answers should be possible. \n\n\n\nBenefits. Improves the body’s efficiency at clearing lactate and builds endurance.\n\n\n\nMeeting Location. The meeting location is just outside the Millennium Arena (Battersea Track), by the park’s map. The Google Maps location is available here ( https://www.google.com/maps/place/Central+Ave,+London+SW11+4BE/@51.4797229,-0.1524933,18z/data=!4m6!3m5!1s0x4876050f7bcd3b05:0x5e39436e2048d82d!8m2!3d51.4804278!4d-0.1528314!16s%2Fg%2F11g63xd5mq?entry=ttu ).\n\n\n\nFacilities. Lockers and showers are available at the Millenium Arena for a fee of £4.60 at reception. There is no need to pre-book this; just come to their reception and pay with a card as you go. The lockers are operated via a token which can be purchased in reception (£0.50) and reused. The bike lockers are available in front of the Millennium Arena. \n\n\n\nHealth & Safety tips. The Battersea Park can be busy (even in the dark evenings) with cyclists, dog walkers, joggers and other park users. We recommend all attendees wear reflective running gear and choose bright colours to increase their visibility during the training. We ask all participants to be extremely cautious on the corners of the park as there might be limited visibility there. We ask all participants to give the way to other park users rather than expect them to do the same. \n\n\n\nLayout of the session. We ask all members to click the I’m In!! button above to indicate their planned attendance. It helps the Lead Team with the planning of the session and the managing of the numbers. For the warm-up, we will use the 400m path from the Millennium Arena to the Bandstand and we will jog it at a social pace. We will then use the remaining 400m (from the Bandstand to the other side of the park) for the dynamic stretches, drills and strides. We ask that the participants with any injury inform the member of the Lead Team before the session by speaking to them face-to-face or emailing us beforehand at technical@serpentine.org.uk Due to the nature of the Threshold sessions, we strongly recommend that all runners participate in the warm-up, drills and strides to ensure that the body is ready for the high effort session. To get the most out of the group session, we recommend that each session is followed by a cool-down jog and light stretches in the groups afterwards.\n\n\n\nAutumn sessions  – it’s time to build endurance and strength or peak for October-December races for distances from 10km to marathon. Sessions include Lactate Threshold (LT) and 10km paces with options for increasing or reducing the challenge for each session according to goals and current fitness.\n\n\n\nDateSessionNotes18 SeptPyramid: 1k/2km/3km/2km/1km @ LT pace with 1’ per km effort recovery. Options to stop after 3km element, depending on training goals25 Sept8-10 x 800 m @ LT pace; 200m jog recovery  Option to do more reps if volume important for your goals2 October4 x 1 mile/1600m @ 10 k pace; 2’ active recovery.Club Champs 10k on Sunday 5 October (Middlesex 10k)9 October6-8 x 1k @ 10k pace;  90” static recoveryRoyal Parks half on Sunday 12th16 October4-6 x 2km @ LT pace; 90” recoveryClub Champs 10 miles on Sunday 19th (Cabbage Patch)23 OctoberPyramid: 1k/2km/3km/2km/1km @ LT pace with 1’ per km effort recovery. Options to stop after 3km element, depending on training goals30 October5-6 x 1 mile/1600m @10k pace; 2’ recovery 7 November2 x 15’ @ LT pace; 2’ recovery  Coach Karen is away14 NovemberTime-based session; 8-12 x 4 mins @ 10km pace; 1’ jog recoveries (Total effort: 32- 48 mins) 21 NovemberLadder: 1k/2k/3k/4km @ LT pace with 1’ per km recoveriesDo fewer steps if more consistent with your goals.28 November8 x 1k @ 10k pace; 90” recovery 4 DecemberSharpener: 5 x 1k @ 5k pace; 2 min recovery Last big marathon of the year11 December2 x 20’ @ LT pace; 90” recovery 18 December6-8 x 1k @ 10k pace; 90” recovery 26 DecemberPyramid: 1k/2km/3km/2km/1km @ LT pace with 1’ per km effort recovery. Boxing Day\n\n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:Short Course Weekend Triathlon Handicap
DESCRIPTION:\nShort Course Weekend (SCW) Handicap Triathlon consists of a 1,000m swim, 30km cycle and a 6.975km run.\n\n\n\nThe challenge will take place anytime a Handicap event is taking place which is usually the first Saturday of the month.\n\n\n\nCompetitors must complete the challenge over the Friday, Saturday and / or Sunday of a given Handicap weekend.\n\n\n\nThe swim will consist of 1,000m and this can be done in any pool; the cycle is 30 anti-clockwise loops (30km) of the inner circle in Regents park; and the run is the 7km Handicap run.\n\n\n\nThis is a Handicap event, the same as the Serpentine Handicap on Saturday. You will have a handicap time for each of the three legs. This should put us all on a roughly level playing field. So the winner of the Handicap Triathlon will be hte person who has improved the most.\n\n\n\nClick here to sign up for the SCW Handicap Triathlon and to post your times as you complete each of the three legs ( https://www.serpentine.org.uk/results/race-2025/?race=15692 ). \n\n\n\nAs this is the first SCW Triathlon Handicap, your handicap times will be based on any past triathlon races we find in the results database. Once you have completed a SCW Triathlon Handicap, those times will be used to calculate your future start times.\n\n\n\nWe are also calculating age-graded times. Swimming age grading uses the times for elite swimmers here ( https://swimminglevel.com/swimming-times/ ). The cycling age-grading uses the best peformances for each age-group from the London T100 in August 2025 (results here ( https://sportstats.one/event/t100-triathlon-world-tour-london-uk/leaderboard/144542 )). The run age-grading is the same as usual, using tables from WAVA ( https://world-masters-athletics.org//wp-content/uploads/2023/02/2023-Age-Factors-WMA.pdf ).\n\n\n\nIf you can’t manage all three events in the weekend then just submit one or two out of the three, this is multisport after all and we try to be as inclusive as possible.\n\n\n\nNow onto the rules:\n\n\n\n\nWatch or recording device must be set into race mode so it will be your total time including any unforeseen stoppages\n\n\n\nThe swim can be completed in any pool on the Friday, Saturday or Sunday\n\n\n\nThe cycle is 30 loops of the inner circle of Regents park going anti-clockwise which can be completed on the Friday, Saturday or Sunday. You can use any self-pedal bike of your choosing but no drafting\n\n\n\nThe run must be completed at the official Handicap on the Saturday morningIf you volunteer at the Handicap itself and can’t run then your time will still be accepted but you have to run the Handicap course on either the Friday, Saturday or Sunday\n\n\n\nSerpie kit is a must!!\n\n\n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:Coached Threshold Session – Greenwich
DESCRIPTION:\nLooking for a daytime structured training session – why not come to the Thursday morning threshold sessions in Greenwich. Threshold training ( https://www.serpentine.org.uk/the-benefits-of-threshold-training/ ) helps improve VO2 max, bringing faster race times at a range of distances from 5km to marathons and reduced fatigue at slower paces. Sessions are suitable for anyone who can run continuously for 5km.\n\n\n\nThe group go to the cafe after the session where coach Karen is happy to provide advice on training plans, running technique and suitable drills.\n\n\n\nWhere and when?\n\n\n\nWe gather here ( https://w3w.co/legend.miles.topped ) in time to start the warm-up at 10am on Thursdays. Check beforehand, but often you can store bags in the boot of a car, at your own risk, whilst training. Training is usually over by around 11.00 am. Pre-booking for each session by midnight on the Wednesday is essential. Please sign up below as we have a limit of 12 runners. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nIn Greenwich park there are clean, public, pay 20p with card toilets, water fountains, car and bike parking and a delightful cafe for post-training refreshments.\n\n\n\n\nThe sessions: \n\n\n\nThe format is very flexible to suit a variety of training goals and fitness levels. \n\n\n\n Each week we warm-up jog for 10 mins, do some mobility work and strides. \n\n\n\nThe main session is anywhere between 4 and 10 x 1 km repetitions around a flat, right-angled triangle route. The pace can be at anything from 5km to sub-threshold pace. Recoveries can be 1-2’ recoveries,  depending on the aims of each athlete. \n\n\n\nCoaches Karen and Sam are happy to discuss what might suit you on the day. \n\n\n\nAfterwards, we do some brief stretches (weather permitting) before reviewing the morning’s work over coffee in the cafe afterwards.\n\n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:Serpentine Handicap
DESCRIPTION:\nThe Serpentine Handicap is a race of 6,975 metres (4.3 miles). The course twice round the Serpentine and Long Water, starting and finishing near the boathouse, as shown on the map below.\n\n\n\nUnlike other running events you may have taken part in, the start of the Handicap is staggered according to individuals’ past performances. Instead of starting at the same time, so that runners are spread out at the finish, the start is spread out and all runners should finish at about the same time. This is the brilliance of the Handicap race – both fast and slow runners have a chance of winning. If all goes well, there is an exciting finish down the final straight. The race rewards not the fastest runner but the runner who performs best relative to their previous performance – that is, the person who has improved the most.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegistration and race timings\n\n\n\nThe Handicap is normally held on the first Saturday of each month. It is free. It is normally for club members only (but get in touch with us if you are a visitor who would like to take part). Registration is from 8:30am to 8.55am near the boathouse, marked by a green cross on the map above. You may leave a bag in the registration area where it is watched over by a marshal during the race. The nearest tube stations are Knightsbridge and Hyde Park Corner.\n\n\n\nCome to breakfast afterwards at the Serpentine Cafe, and remember that your Serpentine membership card gets you a discount at the cafe.\n\n\n\nHandicap volunteers\n\n\n\nOur volunteers make the Handicap what it is. If you can help, please sign up here. You are invited to join us in the cafe afterwards and your drink is on us – please tell us what you want us to order for you. If there is a particular role you want to play please say so below.\n\n\nPlease log in to the website.\n\n\n\n\n\nHistory\n\n\n\nThe history of the Handicap ( https://www.serpentine.org.uk/race-handicap-hc-how/ ) and explanation of the handicap system ( https://www.serpentine.org.uk/race-handicap-hc-how/ ) make interesting reading. The Tom Hogshead Trophy ( https://www.serpentine.org.uk/race-handicap-who-tom/ ) is awarded at the end of the year (you can see past winners using the links on the right of this page). The Stratford Cup ( https://www.serpentine.org.uk/race-handicap-stratford-cup/ ) is presented to the handicap runner who achieves the highest average age-grading in the Handicap over six races in each calendar year, beginning in 2015. The results of the Handicap are published on the Serpentine website. You can also see the Handicap course records.\n\n\n\n\n
