Report

Being better half to a great Serpie woman, I thought I\'d add to her brief thoughts on the Hadleigh 10. It\'s a very friendly race, well marshalled on quiet roads. It was cold. And wet. And windy. The \"gently undulating\" course (this is clearly code for \"always undulating, mainly uphill for the first 5 miles and by the way don\'t forget that really long drag uphill which spans the 8 mile marker) is rather picturesque, but the only flat part of it (as far as my legs can tell - there isn\'t much feeling left...) was the finish line on the Hadleigh football pitch.

The wind blew strongly into your face for the best part of a mile at around 9 miles and the race wasn\'t crowded enough for a runner to find another one to run behind. The memento was very well thought out (a woolly hat with the logo sewn into the front) and worn by many immediately upon finishing - I was certainly glad of its existence!

Feelings I can remember from the race:

[at 1 mile marker] - Jeez, I hope that\'s marked incorrectly, I wasn\'t supposed to be going that fast... (5:48 mile)
[10 minutes into the race] - Gosh, I really hope I don\'t blow up, this is feeling like really hard work today - maybe need more sleep to feel okay - wish we hadn\'t done
that wine course yesterday. Wonder if I can go on like this for another 50 minutes or so...?
[at 3 mile marker] - Hmm. I\'m blowing hard, my legs feel like lead. They should just stop the race now as I am no longer making ground on anyone in front of me and hey, nobody behind me is getting any closer. If they stop the race now, put the results up, that would suit me just
fine.
[at 5 miles] - hey, it goes downhill too! And the wind is behind me! Wheeeeeeeeee
[approaching 8 miles] - Oh. The nearest runner in front is about 100 metres in front of me and that\'s a really long, hard, uphill slope. At least when I struggle to the top, it\'ll be downhill into the finish.
[at 9 miles] - Right, the run in to the finish. Should be a doddle - after all that uphill stuff, this has got to be downhill, right? Hey, where\'s the downhill? And where did that really strong wind come from - why does the law of Sod always make sure it\'s a headwind at this stage? Please keep going legs, you got me this far - think of the great, warm pub lunch I am going to treat you to if you just get me to the finish line.
[finish] - Deep relief. Deliriously happy.

Serpie results:

6th woman home (71 minutes on the dot - though the official results have an extra five seconds, I could see the clock and finish line as she finished) - Jaroslava Korpanec (though she\'d like to note that she ran a 6:19 mile for the first mile and, at that stage, was leading the ladies race...oops) 12th man home (60:29) - Simon Davies

Cold, wet, and happy.
