The second instalment of the New York Road Runners five-borough (Brooklyn, Queens, Bronx, Manhattan and Staten Island) grand prix takes you through the picturesque (in an American kind of way) industrial urban sprawl and middle class streets of Queens. This race and its accompanying 5K are favourably scheduled at the peak of the New York City's fleeting spring-catch it if you can.
The Half-Marathon course starts on Poppenhusen Avenue near 119th Street, adjacent to Hermon MacNeil Park in College Point, Queens. It then continues on city streets for two undulating loops around College Point and Malba that offer fantastic views of Manhattan Island before finishing inside MacNeil Park.
One thing I would credit the Americans for is that they sure do know how to organise a race. Even though this was a relatively small-scale (by NYC standards) event of just under 3000 participants, there were plentiful amounts of water and Gatorade on route. The event was chip-timed, with live bands blasting out music and every runner received a t-shirt and bagels at the finish. One thing I did find a bit bizarre was the singing of the National anthem before the start, this is something that you never get to experience in the UK, I guess they are just more patriotic over the pond.
I would definitely recommend running a race in the USA if one gets the chance.
