Saturday Hill Training at Oxleas Wood

This session is currently not being held.

About Oxleas Wood

Oxleas Wood is a superb natural training ground for off-road hill training. It is one of the few remaining areas of ancient deciduous forest in the Royal Borough of Greenwich in southeast London. Some parts date back over 8,000 years to the last Ice Age. It is part of a larger continuous area of woodland and parkland on the south side of Shooters Hill: other parts are Jack Wood, Shepherdleas Wood, Castle Wood, Oxleas Meadows, Falconwood Field and Eltham Park North (the latter being divided by the A2 main road from its southern section).

It is a Local Nature Reserve and a Site of Special Scientific Interest, covering 72 hectares with oak, silver birch, hornbeam, coppice hazel, and a great number of fine samples of the Wild Service Tree. It covers most of the top of Shooters Hill (in the Royal Borough of Greenwich), and contains a folly called Severndroog Castle.

There is an underground water reservoir in the grassed area called Oxleas Meadow. This serves the local area with water. This is associated with 'the hut' which is a building containing the equipment that Thames Water uses to control the reservoir.

The park has free toilets, a water fountain, free parking and  the cafe boasts good, honest greasy-spoon stuff, generously-proportioned home-made cakes, coffee and  - the blackboard advertises every variety of fry-up breakfast - available all day, as far as I can tell - plus hearty pies, lasagnas and ploughman's lunches. Oh - and the odd special. Less upmarket and lower-priced café than that in the Royal Greenwich Park.

Meeting  and General session plan

Meet at the usual time of 10.00 am at the café in Oxleas Wood car park.

Trail shoes are best as there is usually quite a bit of mud about.

Warm-up hill - about 10-15 mins with a downhill start, a run on water, through mud and back up through Jackwood.

Dynamic mobility exercises and strides

Three training hills of differing terrain/slope/length, giving up to 40 mins of continuous hilly, tempo-effort cross-country training

Warm down back to stretching area

The "Fifth hill" - adjourn to the cafe (see above) for refuelling.

Location & Transport

Directions: Bus 486 from North Greenwich or bus 89 from Lewisham run up Shooters Hill. Get out at the top near Memorial Hospital, carry on up, then café is down road on right.

Postcode of the café is SE18 3JA. There's also plenty of free parking if you are driving.

Hope to see a few of you there. It would be helpful to sign up on the Greenwich list so Karen knows whom to expect.
