Triathlon Relay Championships
27th & 28th August 2016
National Watersports Centre, Holme Pierrepont, Nottingham
The Triathlon Relay Championships (formerly "National Club Triathlon Relays") are held every year near Nottingham at the National Watersports Centre. The race has a unique format with teams of four taking it in turns to complete each leg. When all 4 have completed the 500m swim, they then move to a 15k bike and finish with a 5k run. Last year a number of changes were made (along with the name change) and there will be an 'elite style' tag relay on Sunday as well as a team time trial to complement the 'standard' relay format used in Saturday's races. This year also marks the 25th anniversary of the relay's.
You can see the whole swim, most of the bike and much of the run from the stands and there's a real party atmosphere with all the cheering teams. On the Saturday in the morning, the men's and women's categories will be racing in various categories for National Championship Awards - junior, senior, vet 40 & vet 50. In the afternoon, the mixed category will give the chance for the men's and women's teams to combine and race for more National Championship Awards. You don't have to be a member of the BTF to be part of the Serpentine team but only BTF members are eligible for national titles.
On the Sunday as requested by many of the clubs, there will be an elite style triathlon relay which is open to all groups. Each team member will swim 300 metres, bike 5km, run 1.5km before then tagging the next team member & they do the same course, until all four team members have completed the course. There will be three categories racing for National Championships Awards - men's women's and mixed (2 men & 2 women). Please don't let the elite tag put you off racing Sunday as well as Saturday. It's elite style but all abilities take part.
The race has a later start than usual for triathlon: 9.00am for the morning race and 1.45pm for the afternoon race and although possible to travel from London that morning, cheap and easy accommodation is available at the centre's campsite which works out as a focal point for triathletes across the country at the after race party. Further information can be found on the One Step Beyond website.
Serpentine will enter a number of teams to race Saturday and for those keen to make a full weekend of racing, Sunday as well. This will be based on how much interest there is so sign up now to show you're keen to take part! The club subsidises 50% of the entry fees. If you'd like to take part it'll cost you £20 to race Saturday or £35 if you want to race both days. This is payable when you sign up. To sign up follow the link to the right. Note that accommodation and transport are not included in the payment.
