February handicap report

Firstly, apologies for the delay in publishing the results and for the failure to get text messages to all runners - this was due to the absence of our resident computer guru in remotest Cheltenham. However, we did manage to get the website fixed by Sunday night!

We were blessed by sunny conditions for the race itself - a relief after all the recent deluges - and the runners did particularly well to dodge all the tourists, dog-walkers and swan-feeders out for a stroll. 93 Serpies was a very good turnout!

Rumours that Jon Knox had been training hard recently proved well-founded when he came home first. Sharon Lindores stormed into second, just five seconds behind, while Kiera Attwooll made the podium yet again. She will be tough to beat in this year's Hogshead trophy.

Further down the field, there was a spate of PBs. Ricardo Varela lopped off a minute; Andrew Mills 44 seconds; Scott Fletcher 38 seconds. There were also PBs for Salina Christmas, Giles Heywood, Tom Poynton, Michael Buglass and the Handicap Team's very own Jeremy Milne.

Among the scratch runners, Rick Weston ran an impressive 23.44 (following on from his 2nd in the LFOTM on Friday). Many of the scratch women also improved massively on their first appearances - so well done to them.

At the back, we are sad to report a setback for Sid Wills, who was only the second last home - defeated, if that's the right word, by Keith Evans. Just goes to show that the 2014 Egg award is not a foregone conclusion. As for Val Metcalf, her 27th place has virtually ruled her out of contention.

It was great to see some new faces among the marshals - thank you all for coming. The race-helpers were Nicola Sanderson, Anthony Stranger-Jones, John D'Souza, Desmond Hampton, Pramod Mainie, Aaron de Souza, Alex Jeffreys, Hilary Walker, Ayanda Jolobe, Eddie Murphy, Steve Kjar, James Stratford, Bev Thomas and Chris Tucker.

Best wishes from your Handicap Team!
