October highlights

A few events to look out for in October

October starts with the National Road Relays on Saturday 3 October, where Serpentine has one men's team and at least one women's team representing the club. The October club handicap also takes place on Saturday, with the competition for this year's Tom Hogshead trophy and the new Stratford Cup hotting up. Plus the re-launch of Serpie weekend cycling will take place on Saturday: the aim is to get as many Serpies as possible out cycling the various traditional Surrey routes of 3 hills, 5/6 hills and Windsor. On Sunday 4 October are two club championship races: the Middlesex 10k is the 2015 club championship 10k and the London Fields Aquathlon is both a London Triathlon League and the 2015 club championship aquathlon. On the same day, the Clarendon Way marathon and relay is often popular with Serpies.

There will be a new members' evening on Wednesday 7 October, where new Serpies are invited to find out what the club can offer them and how to get involved.

Saturday 10 October is the date of the opening Start Fitness Metropolitan cross country meeting of the season at Claybury. This cross country league provides our main competitive focus for the winter season and we hope to see lots of Serpies — junior and senior — running and to have a really good turnout. On Sunday 11 October there are a few Serpies planning to run the Chicago marathon and others competing at the Oxford half marathon and Royal Parks half marathon. Also on Sunday is a QEOP junior duathlon. Sunday 11 October is also the cut-off date to sgn up for the North of the Thames cross country championship, which takes place later in the month.

The first Sunday League cross country of the season will be on Sunday 18 October over a 5-mile course at Cheshunt Park in Broxbourne. The Sunday League provides less experienced club members with an excellent introduction to cross country running. There will also be Serpies running the Amsterdam marathon and Thames Riverside half marathon on the same day.

The North of the Thames cross country championship, on Saturday 24 October, is the first of this season's cross country races where advance entry is required, and once again the race is also incorporating the Liddiard Trophy, so there's the opportunity to win a lot of trophies in one race! Also on Saturday will be a Sri Chinmoy 10k in Battersea Park, and the Beachy Head marathon.

On Sunday 25 October the annaul Serpentine-organised Jekyll & Hyde Park Hallowe'en duathlon will take place in Hyde Park. We need lots of you to offer a bit of your time to help out to make sure that we can put on this excellent BTF 2 star event. You can sign up to help here. There will be a few Serpies at the Frankfurt marathon and the Great South Run, both on Sunday and the Dublin marathon is on Monday 26 October.

The October Brooks Last Friday of the Month 5k will be on Friday 30 October. Looking forward to early November, the New York marathon is on Sunday 1 November.

There's more information about lots of these events on the Serpie events planner.
