Round Norfolk Relay - 19/20 September - sign up now

The Round Norfolk Relay is a 17 stage, 197 mile baton passing relay race around the county of Norfolk. If you would like to take part or help please email roundnorfolk@serpentine.org.uk as soon as possible. It'll be first come first served as far as team selection goes.

19th/20th September - sign up now

The Round Norfolk Relay is unique from other multi-stage relay races (e.g. Welsh Castles) in that the baton is moved continuously, passed at each stage from runner to runner, with no pause in between. This means that a number of the stages are run during the night. Its the sort of race that you would probably never do without being part of a running club. Its also a great way to see the beautiful vistas of Norfolk (by daylight or torchlight) and many previous Norfolk virgins have been inspired to return later for a holiday!

Starting in Kings Lynn the event runs around the Wash (where King John lost his crown), along the north Norfolk coastline (past the cliffs, salt marshes and sand dunes), along the Roman roads of Thetford forest, through the misty roads of the fens and back to Kings Lynn (hopefully 24 hours later).

This year the event is on the 19th and 20th of September and we have one team. Nick Fairclough has recklessly agreed to co-ordinate the logistics.

We need runners, drivers and support cyclists. You can do one, two or all three of these. If you just want to help with cycle support, or just drive, you would be very welcome as the team will require lots of support. Once we’ve got you all together we’ll let you know further details in terms of logistics, transport etc.

Runners – The stages vary in distance from 5.5 miles to 19.5 miles and we need 17 different runners.  If you would like to take part as a runner, please let us have an indication of the maximum length of stage that you will be able to do and ideally the pace that you think you can run at. For example your 10km, 10mile or half-marathon time.  This is not for team selection, but to enable us to predict stage changeover times. There is also a prize for the team that most accurately predicts its time!

Drivers – We will hire MPVs and ideally 8 drivers are required to transport the runners to Norfolk and also drive between the stages depositing the next runners in time to take the baton onwards.  Also during the night stages we need a team safety car following behind each runner.

Cyclists – During the day stages, a support cyclist is needed to follow the runner for safety and to provide support, refreshments and encouragement (maybe even the odd song?). It would be great to have a night cyclist as well.

If you would like to take part, whether running, driving, or cycling (or all three) please could you let us know as soon as possible so that we can start the more detailed planning. It'll be first come first served as far as team selection goes.
