Sad news - Desmond Hampton

I am saddened to pass on the news that Serpentine member Desmond Hampton died on 11 October

Desmond first joined Serpentine in 1993 and up until more recent years, he was a regular at the club handicap, running 60+ handicaps during his years as a Serpie. He was also a keen cross country runner, taking part in the Middlesex Vets cross country championship as recently as 2011.

Away from running, Desmond was an accomplished sailor. In 1982 Desmond chartered Gipsy Moth V from the Chichester family for the first Around Alone race (a single-handed round the world race). Lying in second place in the race, Desmond infamously ran the yacht aground just off Australia’s south-eastern coast after failing to wake from a nap.

Desmond was a regular helper at club events including the Last Friday of the Month 5k and will be missed by many Serpies.

Serpentine friends are invited to attend his cremation at St Marylebone Crematorium, East Finchley, at 10am on Monday October 27th.
