Serpie Planner - event reports

Club Championship 5k (21 Jun 2000)

Four days after the 10km Championship was held at Battersea Park on Saturday Morning, 54 Serpies ran in the Inaugural 5k Club Championship on a windy Wednesday evening. The results of both Men's and Ladies' races were similar to Saturday with the first 2 Ladies' and first 3 Men's places being occupied by the same individuals. The race started at 7.30pm and followed in essence the Race For Life course. Thanks should go to Phill Harris for arranging the measuring of this new course.

Unlike Saturday it was impossible to see the race at the front develop, however by the end Karim Chebouki was over half a minute ahead of Robin Kindersley with Patrick Twomey third. Karim was later presented with with the Phill Harris Cup which was donated by Phill.

In the ladies race Elinor Rest was the clear winner just over a minute ahead of Sue-Ellen Horrocks, who overtook Jane Calderbank in the last 100 metres to finish second lady.

The times for all Serpies who were eligible for The Club Championship are listed above. During the course of the race Jean Luc's eldest son quite unwittingly pressed the button on the stopwatch which stopped the watch for about a second, so that explained the reason why we asked a sample of runners for their own times to see what the average discrepancy was compared with the time we recorded when restarting the watch - so if you were asked thank you for your assistance. Unfortunately Steve Brocklesby whilst running a time of 20 mins 53 secs forgot to bring his club vest / T-Shirt.

Finally thanks to those Marshalls on the route Paul Ingram, Ruth Jackson, Owen Barder and to John Walker who took numbers at the finish, and also to Phill and Rachel for putting out the Kilometre Markers around the park.

Club Championship 5k (05 Jun 2002)

All those completing this race deserve extra points. The heavens positively opened, making it hard to tell which was path and which was lake. We had to officially sanction one short cut to avoid a massive puddle at the far end of the central avenue, or we

A beautiful summer evening in Battersea Park.

Club Championship 5k (12 Jul 2005)

Congratulation to all 73 runners who finished the race today. It was a bit hot but we couldn't know it in advance. Probably still better than in 2002 when it was "raining cats and dogs".

Also congratulations to Emma Calderbank and Massimiliano Monteforte for becoming the new 5k club champions. Sarah Newton claimed the prize for the best age graded runner.

Marcimilliano is going to run a marathon on Sunday so he took it fairly easy, shadowing Andy Reeves to the 4 km marker before pulling away to claim an uncontested victory. Good luck on Sunday for your try to beat 2:15! Urban Bettag (2nd claim), Ian Druce and Andy Davies filling the top 5. Emma didn't play with the opposition and has beaten the second lady, Sarah, by over 2 minutes. Valerie Metcalf and Cristel Beukes were also close to 20 minutes.

Thanks to David Knight for putting the results online so fast while also producing some great pictures at the same time.

I would also like to thank all other helpers, Teppo Palosaari and Maggie Moran for time keeping, Jo Currie, Lizzie Bott, Robin Gray and Anthony Stranger-Jones for taking results, Rachel Jarvis for guarding the bags, Alan Woodward for providing first aid coverage (which thankfully was not needed) and Richard Wisdom, Matt Cunnane, Dean Wheeler, Paula Sadler, Nadya Labib, Ken Kwok, Rachel Powell, Jane Harris and Lynne and Simon Maughan for marshalling the course. I know I forgot one name, please remind me!
And once again to Malcolm French for marking the course and supplying most of the needed material.

Club Championship 5k (25 Jul 2006)

There was a record turnout for the 5k Club Championship, despite the hot and humid conditions. A group of five men went through the 2k point together before splitting up as conditions and the strong pace set by Eric, took their toll. The wins by Eric and Christine were hard won given the conditions, with Karen heading the age-graded ranking.
